It’s Mar­di Gras week­end here on Vir­tu­al Com­mu­ni­ty Radio, and our cel­e­bra­tions con­tin­ue, cen­tered around the Cre­ole Queen, our tra­di­tion­al river­boat, docked at Chest­nut Hills in Sec­ond Life.

Sun­day, Feb­ru­ary 27th from 2–4pm SLT — Join us for a Dance Par­ty on the Cre­ole Queen, live in Sec­ond Life.  DJ Cale­do­nia Sky­tow­er will be play­ing jazz, Cajun, and Zyde­co music on our ele­gant riv­er boat, appro­pri­ate­ly decked out for the occa­sion. Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler! — Mardi Gras on VCR

It’s Mar­di Gras week­end here on Vir­tu­al Com­mu­ni­ty Radio, and our cel­e­bra­tions on Feb­ru­ary 26 and 27th cen­tre around the Cre­ole Queen, our tra­di­tion­al river­boat, docked at Chest­nut Hills in Sec­ond Life.

TODAY Sat­ur­day, Feb­ru­ary 26th — Our Fea­tured Genre will be the music of Car­ni­val and Mar­di Gras from New Orleans to Latin Amer­i­ca and beyond, plus some old-time R&B and Trad Jazz.

Then at 1–2pm Pacific/SLT — Come along to the Cre­ole Queen for a Live Tarot Read­ing with VCRa­dio’s Tarot @ Teatime co-host Hon­ey Heart. Stroll on the banks of the riv­er and request a per­son­al read­ing of the cards. All read­ings are free, con­duct­ed pri­vate­ly in Voice, and are strict­ly con­fi­den­tial and for enter­tain­ment pur­pos­es only.

And at 12 noon and 4pm Pacific/SLT (8pm or mid­night in the UK) tune in for a spe­cial Mar­di Gras edi­tion of Where Have You Been? which cov­ers some of the his­to­ry and back­ground to Mar­di Gras and Car­ni­val and sug­gests an addi­tion­al venue you might like to vis­it between now and “Fat Tues­day” itself, March 1.

Jack Flan­ders treks to Moroc­co, believ­ing that in this prim­i­tive coun­try, where mag­ic remains an inte­gral part of dai­ly life, he may find this knowl­edge. Jack dis­cov­ers far more than he expect­ed when he steps through the Gate of Pea­cocks, the entrance to that lost world. Jack has stepped out of mod­ern day Moroc­co and into the realm where the knowl­edge of mag­ic is a req­ui­site sur­vival skill. Here’s a cou­ple of tastes of this week’s episode…

Where Have You Been? Mardi Gras Special

We’re run­ning a spe­cial edi­tion of our orig­i­nal series, “Where Have You Been?” (where we detail things to do and places to see around the Sec­ond Life Grid) that will be broad­cast on two days only — Wednes­day 23rd and Sat­ur­day 26th of Feb­ru­ary, 12 noon and 4pm Pacific/SLT; 8pm and mid­night UK time. It’s a spe­cial about Mar­di Gras — “Fat Tues­day”, which falls this year on March 1st. In the episode we pro­vide plen­ty of back­ground to the Mar­di Gras and Car­ni­val cel­e­bra­tions, focus­ing on New Orleans in par­tic­u­lar, plus we make a sug­ges­tion of a place you might want to vis­it to enjoy your own Mar­di Gras cel­e­bra­tion.

Piano-issimo

Join us today for a pro­gramme of piano music — main­ly clas­si­cal but not entire­ly.

In addi­tion to some amaz­ing piano con­cer­tos and oth­er clas­si­cal works, we’ll also be play­ing pieces like the “Den­ham Con­cer­tos” — pieces writ­ten to cap­i­talise on the suc­cess of Richard Addin­sel­l’s War­saw Con­cer­to from the film Dan­ger­ous Moon­light (the film-mak­ers asked Rach­mani­nov to write a piece but he declined). These include Clive Richard­son’s Lon­don Fan­ta­sia, orig­i­nal­ly to be titled Coven­try Fan­ta­sia after the Mid­land city severe­ly dam­aged in the Blitz of Novem­ber 1940, but his pub­lish­ers told him that Lon­don would sell bet­ter. This tremen­dous work musi­cal­ly traces a day in the life of a city at war.

There are oth­er piano pieces from the movies too, but in addi­tion there’s light music, solo and orches­tral works, music-hall pieces arranged for piano, and much more. Do tune in!

Light Classical Music …and more

Sat­ur­day, Feb­ru­ary 19th: today on Vir­tu­al Com­mu­ni­ty Radio, we’re pleased to present a pro­gramme of light clas­si­cal music, one of our core gen­res.

The pro­gramme fea­tures a wide range of both artists and com­posers, some well-known and some, per­haps, who are sel­dom heard. Lis­ten out for the likes of Tom­lin­son, Ketel­bey, Alwyn, Gun­ning and Addin­sell, for exam­ple, to name but a few, and enjoy a day of tune­ful, often relax­ing orches­tral music.

Begin­ning Feb­ru­ary 17th, we’re pleased to re-broad­cast the sec­ond of our live pre­sen­ta­tions from Octo­ber 2021 by the hosts of our orig­i­nal series: “Tarot @ Teatime”, air­ing Thurs­days and Sun­days at noon and 4pm Pacif­ic Time/SLT, 8pm and mid­night in the UK. This pro­gramme was orig­i­nal­ly pre­sent­ed live and on-the-air in Octo­ber as part of the 2021 Haunt­ed Hol­low. This episode will also air on Feb­ru­ary 20th, 24th, and 27th.
